TIMELINE OF EVENTS
January 20, 2020: United States first confirmed cases identified.
January 30, 2020: The W.H.O. declared a global health emergency.
February 11, 2020: The disease is named COVID-19, an acronym that stands for Coronavirus disease 2019.
February 11, 2020: Press Release: AUSD Joins forces with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, the California Department of Public Health, and the County of Riverside Department of Public Health to to Protect the Health and Support the Wellbeing of Students and Staff.
February 29, 2020: The United States records its first coronavirus death and announces travel restrictions.
March 12, 2020: Press Release: AUSD Holds a Special Board Meeting to Discuss District Response to Coronavirus.
March 13, 2020: A national emergency is declared.
March 13, 2020: All schools in Riverside County closed by Order of the Health Officer of the County of Riverside from March 16 through April 3, 2020.
March 13, 2020: Press Release: AUSD Response to Governor Gavin Newsom Message on School Closure.
March 17, 2020: All schools closure extended through April 30 by Order of the Health Officer of the County of Riverside through April 30, 2020.
March 17, 2020: In a statement, Governor Newsom said, “Don’t anticipate schools are going to open up in a week. It’s unlikely that many of these schools, few if any, will open before the summer break.”
March 26, 2020: The United States leads the world in confirmed coronavirus cases with at least 81,321 confirmed infections and more than 1,000 deaths.
March 31, 2020: In a letter to County Superintendents, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, wrote, "Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning."
April 1, 2020: Governor Newsom and State School Superintendent Tony Thurmond unoffically announce schools are to remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
