Application Process for Dual Language Immersion

  • The following is the application process for parents interested in having their children participate in the Dual Language Immersion program at Terrace Elementary or Valley View Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year.

    Please note: All incoming Kindergarten registration packets must be submitted to their school of residence.

    STEP 1: ATTEND A MANDATORY PARENT INFORMATIONAL MEETING

    Interested parents from all attendance areas should plan to attend one of the mandatory parent informational meetings to learn more about Dual Language Immersion program and its requirements. Applications for Dual Language Immersion program will be available during this meeting.  

    Informational meetings will be offered on the following dates:

    Terrace Elementary

    February 2, 2017   6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

    March 1, 2017   8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

    March 1, 2017   6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

    Valley View Elementary

    Childcare will be provided at all meetings.

    Please note that this meeting is for information only and not an indication that your child will be accepted in the program.

    STEP 2: SUBMIT APPLICATION

    After attending an informational meeting, if you are interested in having your child considered for the Dual Language Immersion program, complete an application and submit to the English Language Learner Office by 4/14/2017.  The EL Office is located at 9 KPC Parkway, Corona, CA 92879. Applications may also be submitted to Terrace Elementary or Valley View Elementary.

    STEP 3: STUDENT SCREENING AND PARENT ONE-ON-ONE CONSULTATION

    Once you’ve submitted an application you will be contacted to schedule an appointment. At that time your child will be assessed to determine his/her native language levels.

    STEP 4: SELECTION OF STUDENTS

    Eligible students will be accepted to the program based on space availability and the following program criteria:

      • Younger siblings of currently enrolled students in a Dual Language Immersion program
      • School of residence
      • Students that reside within Alvord USD boundaries
      • Students who enter our district and were in a Dual Language Immersion program at their previous district
      • Spanish-proficient students who are new to the United States  
      • Students from outside Alvord USD boundaries

    STEP 5: PARENT NOTIFICATION AND COMMITMENT LETTER

    Parents will be notified of student placement by 5/31/2017.  At this time, parents sign a commitment form to express their pledge to the program. Students who are not initially selected will be placed on a waiting list for openings that may become available at a later date.

    STEP 6: PARENT ORIENTATION AND TRAINING

    Parents of students selected for the Dual Language Immersion program will be offered an orientation and training session.

    Parents must agree to provide transportation, commit to keeping the student in the Dual Language Immersion program throughout the elementary grades, agree to provide academic support at home and adhere to transfer policies.
