Hello and welcome to our Character Education page. At Lake Hills we strive to promote character education as well as academic education. Our overreaching theme is that "Lake Hills Hawks have C.L.A.S.S."
The letters stand for:
To help promote having CLASS, students are able to earn "Caught Having Class" tickets. These tickets are given out by any staff member that catches a student performing an action or behavior that falls within the traits of having CLASS. The student then has the responsibility of placing the tickets in a ticket drum for a chance to win a prize that is drawn once a week. There is no limit to the amount of tickets a student can earn, the more they earn the better their chance in the drawing.
Alvord Unified utilizing the Second Step Program for TK-5 character education lessons, driven by the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) Standards. Character education lessons address personal, social, academic, and career-related needs at the child's developmental level. Topics may include self-esteem, conflict resolution, study skills, anger management, career awareness, tattling/reporting, friendship/social skills, responsibility, respect, teasing/bullying, feelings, cooperation, goal setting/decision-making, and peer pressure.
On our playground we have The Buddy Bench which is used to help students with their social/emotional well being and promote positive interaction between peers. The Buddy Bench concept was created by an elementary student who saw a need to help create positive social interactions. Helping new students to the school feel welcome and find new friends, help peers who are having a rough day at school, and give students an opportunity to observe the playground to determine where they want to join in, are the main goals of the bench. We have two benches, one on the 1st grade playground area and one near the upper grade playground equipment area. Each class will be instructed on its purpose and proper use at the start of the year.
