• Dear Arlanza Families,

We hope this letter finds you cool and relaxed. The 2015-2016 school year will begin in a few weeks and it promises to be a wonderful one!

We have a new seal and mascot image for Arlanza. During the May 2015 School Site Council meeting, members approved a new seal and mascot image for Arlanza.

The proposed new seal and mascot image were sent to the Board of Education in June for approval with the following rationale:

Spanish Explorers are a big part of Arlanza’s history, and an explorer mascot continues to bridge the past with the present. The current seal depicts what appears to be a Spanish explorer with an axe and a religious person holding a cross. Dialogue between parents and staff at a Principal’s Coffee session during the fall of 2013 resulted in a school-wide and community-wide discussion about “rebranding” Arlanza with a new image for the explorer mascot because parents wanted a mascot image that was more “kid-friendly” and not tied to the perceived violent history of the Spanish Conquistadores. Arlanza staff collaborated with the art teacher and students from Norte Vista’s Art Class to generate drawings of images that depicted explorers. Various drawings by NVHS students were submitted to the site for consideration, and after voting took place by students, parents, and staff, the winning drawing was the image of a girl and boy exploring the world. The image for the seal was generated and proposed by a staff member and her husband. The seal depicts an open book to represent knowledge, a magnifying glass to represent the seeking of knowledge, and the world to represent the scope of knowledge seeking. All together, the seal represents Arlanza students seeking worldly knowledge. The proposed seal and mascot image reflect the Alvord Unified School District’s core values, beliefs, and the objectives of the Strategic Plan. The seal represents Arlanza students seeking worldly knowledge, while the mascot image represents Arlanza students exploring their potential within our school, community, city, state, and world.

We are happy to announce that the Board of Education approved the new seal and mascot image at their June meeting, so we will officially add the new seal and mascot image to official school documents and, hopefully, have a mural painted on the school’s exterior walls. Thanks to all students, parents, and staff who had a part in this process.

The Arlanza family continues to grow! For 2015-16, we welcome some new staff members to our site. First, we are happy to have psychologist, Mr. Giorgio Di Salvatore, and his team of interns. Mr. Di Salvatore and the interns will be in room 11. Next, we welcome Ms. Heather Haley, our new Instructional Computer Assistant. Ms. Haley will monitor the computer lab in room 10. Finally, we welcome a new Library Assistant who will be in room 9. These new staff members will be wonderful assets to our already effective and amazing Arlanza family!

The Arlanza staff will host Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 12th from 5:00-6:30pm.  School does not begin until Thursday, August 13th, but the staff agreed it is best to give everyone the opportunity to meet the administrators and teachers, hear about classroom expectations, and know about general procedures (for example, arrival and dismissal procedures) and school rules BEFORE school starts. Our Back to School Night schedule is as follows:

    Wednesday, August 12, 2015

5:00-5:30pm – Meet and Greet Principal  & Assistant Principal / PTA Meeting in the MPR

    5:35-6:00pm – Classroom Presentations (Session 1)

    6:05-6:30pm – Classroom Presentations (Session 2)

During the 5:00pm Meet and Greet session, Mrs. Pierce and I will talk about school procedures and programs. Additionally, Arlanza’s PTA Board will be hosting a Membership Drive and will present the plans for fundraising and student activities for the 2015-16 school year. Mrs. Pierce and I will introduce the teachers at 5:25pm, and then students and families will be welcomed into classrooms to listen as teachers share expectations for learning and behavior for the school year.

Mrs. Pierce and I are looking forward to seeing each of you at 5:00pm on Wednesday, August 12th for Back to School Night and then again at 8:00am on Thursday, August 13th for the first day of school! In the meantime, we hope you continue to enjoy your summer vacation!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Purcell                                                          Mrs. Pierce

    Principal                                                                Assistant Principal
