Mrs. Nannette Whiting
I am a graduate of La Sierra High School, CSU Fullerton, and Cal Poly Pomona having achieved a Masters degree in English Rhetoric and Composition. My most challenging title to earn has been mother of three children. I enjoy all things outdoors, particularly baseball, camping, and hiking. As a first-generation college graduate, I am passionate about AVID and helping our students go farther in education that their predecessors.
I believe in the power of supporting students and have repeatedly served in mentoring capacities. It is fabulous to see students' growth and to know that their confidence is now supporting others. I want my students to know that I care and that I did everything in my power to help make their classes be both meaningful and manageable. I select meaningful because it is important to me that as support staff we push for the best in our students and stretch their knowledge and practice- just as they, in turn, should push themselves. If it is easy and comfortable, that means we can go further to increase rigor, engagement, or differentiation. I want the students to know that I will practice these things when they come to my room. I want them to know that I care enough to plan, model, and teach concepts with them so that the rigor is attainable for each student. My job is not to make students’ jobs harder. It is to provide support so that our new learning can be integrated into their existing knowledge frames- let’s just enrich this portion of the writing- let’s just try engaging students in this additional way- so that students gradually grow into a better them. I want to honor their current persona and just expand it here and there. It is by honoring who they are, and what they already do well, that they will know I care.
Course communication policy:
It is always a pleasure to conference. Please really do reach out if I can support you. District email is my preferred method of contact. I typically reply within 48 hours. If it is longer than that, please resend your message in case the bits got lost in the web waves!
All periods have a dedicated Google Classroom. Each students has been provided with the join code. Parents and students are encouraged to look through the classroom together by selecting the "CLASSWORK" center tab to see current and previous assignments.
LATE WORK POLICY:
Late work is accepted with no penalty when submitted in the grading period in which it was assigned. No late work is accepted after the grading period as grades are posted and our class has moved to other studies. Through a parent conference individual contracts can be created for credit recovery.
