Alvord Today
Transforming the Educational Landscape
In Alvord Unified School District, we believe that everyone has the right to a world-class education. We are honored to serve a community enriched by its diversity, encompassing the western portion of the City of Riverside, the eastern portion of the City of Corona, and segments of incorporated parts of Riverside County. Daily, each of our 23 schools provides our nearly 17,000 students with the relevant, engaging, and innovative learning experiences necessary to inspire them to fulfill their own unlimited potential.
Using an asset-based approach and building on the belief that excellence is within everyone, we seek students' voice and empower teachers to lead as we support a collective focus on Literacy and Equity. Literacy is a vital component of college and career readiness, and our district-wide plan outlines the steps necessary to ensure that students gain the ability to read, write, and communicate with competence and confidence in the 21st century.
As a learning organization committed to addressing the unique needs of each student, Alvord is proud to offer and grow a number of programs such as Dual Language Immersion (DLI), International Baccalaureate (IB), Project Lead The Way (PLTW), Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and a music program beginning with instrumental music in the elementary grades, each taught by dedicated, highly qualified teachers.
Capitalizing on the belief that success is our shared responsibility, we empower every individual to collectively transform the educational landscape.

Alvord Cares
ABOUT ALVORD CARES
Established in 2017, Alvord Cares was created to ensure that students' most basic needs are met—so they can arrive at school ready to learn and thrive. Our mission is to support Alvord Unified School District students and families by removing barriers related to food insecurity and other critical needs.
The program is led by a dedicated committee that includes Co-Founder and Trustee Carolyn M. Wilson, members of the Board of Education, classified and certificated staff, district managers and administrators, and community representatives from Riverside.
Alvord Cares is powered by the generosity of Alvord employees and community partners, who contribute both monetary gifts and nonperishable food items. Every donation directly supports students and families in need.
UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES
Food insecurity and housing instability often stem from broader social and economic issues, including:
- Unemployment or underemployment
- High housing costs
- Low wages and poverty
- Limited access to assistance programs
- Rising healthcare expenses
These challenges are complex, but through programs like Alvord Cares, we can make a real difference for our students.
OUR PURPOSE
At Alvord Cares, we are committed to making sure every student feels supported and prepared to learn. Through efforts like our Backpack Food Program, we provide meals for students to take home over the weekend—ensuring no child goes hungry when school is not in session.
We believe every student deserves a future full of opportunity, and that begins with meeting their fundamental needs today.
HUNGER & HOMELESSNESS IN OUR SCHOOLS
According to Feeding America, over 13 million children in the United States live in food-insecure households. These children often come to school hungry, making it difficult to concentrate, engage, and succeed academically. Hunger negatively impacts not only their performance in school but also their overall health and well-being.
To combat this, schools nationwide are beginning to treat breakfast as an essential part of the school day—just like lunch—helping to reach more students in need.
EMPLOYEE SUPPORT MAKES IT POSSIBLE
Our work would not be possible without the continued support of our Alvord team. Employee donations help us purchase nutritious, easy-to-prepare food and essential hygiene products for students in need. Each weekend, we distribute bags of nonperishable, student-friendly items to ensure our most vulnerable learners are supported—even when they're not in the classroom.
