The Responsible Use Guidelines (RUG) explain the expectations for everyone who uses Alvord USD technology, networks, and accounts — including new technology such as generative artificial intelligence. Select your language and audience below.
The purpose of the District’s Responsible Use Guidelines (“RUG”) is to prevent unauthorized access and other unlawful activities by users online, prevent unauthorized disclosure of, or access to, sensitive information, and to comply with legislation including, but not limited to, the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA). Furthermore, the RUG clarifies the educational purpose of District technology. As used in these guidelines, “user” includes anyone using computers, Internet, email, and all other forms of electronic communication or equipment provided by the District regardless of the physical location of the user. The RUG applies even when District-provided equipment (laptops, tablets, etc.) is used off District property. Additionally, the RUG applies when non-District devices access the District network or sensitive information.
The District uses technology protection measures to block or filter access, as much as reasonably possible, to visual and written depictions that are obscene, pornographic, or harmful to minors over the District network. The District can and will monitor users’ online activities and access, review, copy, and store or delete any communications or files and share them with adults as necessary. Users should have no expectation of privacy regarding their use of District equipment, network, and/or Internet access or files, including email. Users understand that the District has the right to take back possession of District equipment at any time.
The District will take all necessary measures to secure the network against potential cybersecurity threats. This may include blocking access to District applications, including, but not limited to, email, data management and reporting tools, and other web applications outside the United States and Canada.
The RUG also applies to the use of artificial intelligence (AI), including, but not limited to, generative AI tools that can generate new content including text, images, video, audio, structures, computer code, synthetic data, etc. in response to prompts generated by users.
By initialing and signing these guidelines, you acknowledge that you understand the following:
- I will practice positive digital citizenship, including appropriate behavior and contributions on websites, social media, discussion boards, media sharing sites, and all other electronic communications, including new technology such as generative artificial intelligence.
- I understand, acknowledge, and agree that if I am under 13 years old, I will not use social media or artificial intelligence tools without the express permission and guidance of a supervising adult (parent, guardian, teacher).
- I will create and share images, recordings, videos, and statements that accurately represent information and aim to inform others positively.
- Audio or video recordings of others using personal or district devices are strictly prohibited without explicit permission and guidance from a supervising adult (district staff).
- I will be honest in all digital communications.
- I understand that what I do and post online must not disrupt school activities or compromise school safety and security.
- I will not share personal information about myself or others including, but not limited to, names, home addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, or visuals such as pictures, videos, and drawings.
- I will not include personal information about myself or others in prompts for AI, including generative AI tools.
- I will not meet anyone in person that I have met only on the Internet.
- I will be aware of privacy settings on websites that I visit.
- I will abide by all laws, these Responsible Use Guidelines, and all District security guidelines.
- I will not share any school or District usernames and passwords with anyone or directly or indirectly allow another person to use them.
- I will not access the account information of others.
- I will log out of unattended equipment and accounts in order to maintain privacy and security.
- I will use school-appropriate language in all electronic communications, including email, social media posts, audio recordings, video conferencing, and artistic works.
- I will not send and/or distribute hateful, discriminatory, or harassing digital communications, or content that is sexually explicit.
- I understand that bullying in any form, including cyberbullying, is unacceptable.
- I will not seek out, display, generate, or circulate material that is hate speech, sexually explicit, or violent.
- I understand that any exceptions must be approved by a teacher or administrator as part of a school assignment.
- I understand that the use of the District network for illegal, political, or commercial purposes is strictly forbidden.
- I will only use software and hardware that has been authorized by the District.
- I will not try to get around security settings and filters, including using proxy servers, or tethering to a personal device to access websites blocked by the District.
- I will not install or use illegal software or files, including copyright-protected materials, unauthorized software, or apps on any District computers, tablets, smartphones, or other new technologies.
- I know that I am not to use the Internet using a personal data plan at school, including personal mobile hotspots that enable access on District equipment.
- I will not use the District network or equipment to obtain unauthorized information, attempt to access information protected by privacy laws, or impersonate other users.
- I understand that vandalism in any form is prohibited.
- I will report any known or suspected acts of vandalism to the appropriate authority.
- I will report a lost or stolen district device immediately to my school.
- I will respect my and others’ use and access to District equipment.
- I acknowledge that I am obtaining and using a District-owned device(s).
- I will adhere to all copyright guidelines, ensuring that I do not copy someone else’s work and present it as my own. Additionally, I will properly cite all sources, including those generated by AI and generative AI tools.
- I will not download illegally obtained music, software, apps, and other works.
- Teachers cannot submit student work into generative AI tools for scoring without student or parent permission.
- Parents, guardians, and students will be informed of specific data collection initiatives, and consent will be sought.
- Generative AI tools may be used by students as a study assistant to prepare for assignments or assessments, but not to complete the assignments or assessments unless specifically stated by the teacher.
- AI tools will not be used by staff as the sole means to determine plagiarism.
The District makes no guarantees about the quality of the services provided and is not liable for any claims, losses, damages, costs, or other obligations arising from the use of the network or District accounts. Users are responsible for any charges incurred while using District devices and/or the network. The District also denies any liability for the accuracy or quality of the information obtained through user access. Any statement accessible online is understood to be the author’s individual point of view and not that of the District, its affiliates, or employees. Students under the age of 18 should only access District network accounts outside of school if a parent or legal guardian supervises their usage at all times. The student’s parent or guardian is responsible for monitoring the minor’s use outside of school and for ensuring that the student abides by the Responsible Use Guidelines when using District equipment or the District network.

Lo que la comunidad del Distrito hace y publica en línea no debe interrumpir las actividades escolares o de lo contrario compromete la seguridad e integridad individual y escolar.
El propósito de las Normas de Uso Responsable en el Distrito (“RUG”) es prevenir el acceso no autorizado y otras actividades ilícitas entre los usuarios de internet, evitar la divulgación no autorizada de, o acceso a, información confidencial y cumplir con las leyes, incluyendo entre otras a, la Ley de Protección Infantil en Internet (CIPA), Ley de Protección de Privacidad Infantil en Internet (COPPA), Ley de Privacidad y Derechos Educativos Familiares (FERPA) y la Ley de Privacidad de Comunicación Electrónica en California (CalECPA). Además, RUG aclara el propósito educativo del uso de tecnología en el Distrito. Para el propósito de estas normas “usuario” incluye a toda persona que utiliza computadoras, internet, correo electrónico y todo otro tipo de comunicación electrónica o equipo proporcionado por el Distrito, sin importar la locación física del usuario. Estas normas aplican aun si el equipo proporcionado por el Distrito (computadoras portátiles, tabletas, etc.) se usa fuera de sus instalaciones. Además, las normas aplican cuando se utiliza la red o información confidencial del Distrito con dispositivos no proporcionados por él.
En la medida de lo razonablemente posible, el Distrito utiliza los medios de protección de tecnología en su red para bloquear o filtrar acceso a representaciones visuales o escritas obscenas, pornográficas o que sean perjudiciales para los menores de edad. El Distrito puede y supervisará las actividades en línea y accederá, revisará, copiará, guardará o borrará todo tipo de comunicación o archivos y los compartirá con los adultos según sea necesario. Los usuarios no deben tener expectativas de privacidad en cuanto al uso de equipo del Distrito, ni a su red y/o acceso a internet o archivos, incluyendo el correo electrónico. Los usuarios comprenden que el Distrito tiene derecho a retomar posesión de su equipo en cualquier momento determinado.
El Distrito tomará las medidas necesarias para proteger a su red ante posibles amenazas contra la seguridad cibernética. Esto puede incluir bloqueo de acceso a aplicaciones del Distrito, incluyendo entre otras a correo electrónico, herramientas de control e informes de datos y otras aplicaciones de web fuera de los Estados Unidos y Canadá.
Las normas RUG también aplican al uso de inteligencia artificial (IA), incluyendo entre otros, herramientas IA que pueden generar contenido nuevo incluyendo textos, imágenes, video, audio, estructuras, códigos de informática, datos sintéticos, etc. en respuesta a instrucciones generadas por usuarios.
Al agregar mis iniciales y firmar este documento, reconozco que mi hijo/a y yo comprendemos lo siguiente:
- Mi hijo/a practicará el civismo digital el cual incluye buen comportamiento y contribuciones apropiadas en sitios web, redes sociales, foros de debate, sitios de intercambios de medios y toda otra comunicación electrónica, incluyendo tecnología nueva tal como inteligencia artificial generativa.
- Mi hijo/a no generará ni distribuirá imágenes, grabaciones, videos o afirmaciones que representen erróneamente o cuya intención sea mal informar a los demás.
- Están estrictamente prohibidas las grabaciones de audio o video de otras personas utilizando dispositivos personales o del Distrito sin la autorización expresa y orientación de algún adulto que supervise (personal del Distrito).
- Mi hijo/a será honesto en toda comunicación digital.
- Mi hijo/a comprende que lo que haga y publique en línea no debe interrumpir las actividades escolares o poner en riesgo la seguridad e integridad escolar.
- No compartirá su información personal o la de los demás, incluyendo entre otra a, nombres, domicilio, números de teléfono, fechas de nacimiento o imágenes tales como fotografías, videos y dibujos.
- No incluirá su información personal o la de otras personas al dar instrucciones a IA, incluyendo herramientas de IA generativa.
- Estará consciente de las configuraciones de privacidad de los sitios web que visite.
- Cumplirá todas las leyes, estas Normas de Uso Responsable y todas las normas de seguridad del Distrito.
- No compartirá con nadie ningún nombre de usuario ni contraseñas de la escuela o Distrito ni permitirá, directa o indirectamente, que alguien más las use.
- No obtendrá acceso a la información de cuenta de otras personas.
- Egresará de dispositivos y cuentas que no esté supervisando para poder mantener la privacidad y seguridad.
- Utilizará vocabulario apropiado para la escuela en toda comunicación electrónica, incluyendo correo electrónico, publicaciones en redes sociales, grabaciones de audio, video conferencias y obras artísticas.
- No enviará ni distribuirá comunicación digital de odio, discriminatoria, hostigadora ni contenido sexualmente explícito.
- Mi hijo/a comprende que es inaceptable el acoso escolar (bullying) de cualquier tipo, incluyendo cibernético.
- No buscará, exhibirá, generará ni pondrá en circulación material con discurso de odio, sexualmente explícito o violento.
- Mi hijo/a entiende que está estrictamente prohibido el uso de la red del Distrito para propósitos ilícitos, de política o con fines comerciales.
- Únicamente utilizará el software (programas) y hardware (equipo) de informática autorizados por el Distrito.
- No intentará evadir configuraciones de seguridad y filtros, incluyendo por medio del uso de servidores proxy o anclaje a red (tethering) con un dispositivo personal para obtener acceso a sitios web bloqueados por el Distrito.
- No instalará ni usará programas o archivos ilícitos, incluyendo materiales protegidos por derecho de autor, software o aplicaciones no autorizados en computadoras, tabletas, teléfonos inteligentes u otra tecnología nueva del Distrito.
- No utilizará la red del Distrito o equipo para obtener información no autorizada, intentar acceder información protegida por leyes de confidencialidad ni se hará pasar por otros usuarios.
- Mi hijo/a comprende que está prohibido todo tipo de vandalismo.
- Mi hijo/a o yo reportaremos todo acto o sospecha de vandalismo ante las autoridades correspondientes.
- Mi hijo/a o yo reportaremos de inmediato ante la escuela la pérdida o robo de dispositivos del Distrito.
- Mi hijo/a respetará su propio uso y acceso, así como el de los demás, a equipo del Distrito.
- Mi hijo/a está consciente de que obtuvo y utiliza un dispositivo(s) propiedad del Distrito.
- Mi hijo/a acatará todas las normas de derecho de autor, asegurándose de no copiar el trabajo de alguien más y presentarlo como propio. Además, citará toda fuente apropiadamente, incluyendo aquellas generadas por IA y herramientas generativas de IA.
- No descargará música, software, aplicaciones ni otros trabajos obtenidos ilícitamente.
- Los maestros no pueden usar IA generativa para calificar los trabajos de estudiantes sin el permiso del estudiante o padre de familia.
- Se informará a los padres, tutores y estudiantes acerca de iniciativas de recopilación específica de datos y se les pedirá su consentimiento.
- Los estudiantes pueden utilizar herramientas de IA generativa como apoyo de estudio para prepararse para tareas o evaluaciones, pero no para completarlos a menos que el maestro así lo especifique.
- El personal escolar no utilizará herramientas de IA como único método de determinar la presencia de plagio.
