Purpose & Eligibility

The Mobile Hotspot Program supports digital equity by lending district-owned mobile hotspot ("MiFi") devices to students who do not have reliable internet access at home. The device is intended to support participation in Alvord USD coursework, online instruction, and district-approved educational resources.

  • Hotspots are loaned at the discretion of the school site and the District, typically one device per household.
  • The device remains the property of Alvord Unified School District at all times.
  • A completed and signed permission slip must be on file before a device is issued.

Acceptable Use

Use of the hotspot is governed by the district's Responsible Use Guidelines and Technology Policies. By using the device, students and families agree to follow these policies, available at alvordschools.org/itpoliciesIT policies.

The hotspot may not be used for:

  • Any illegal activity or any activity that violates district policy.
  • Accessing, sending, or storing obscene, harmful, or otherwise inappropriate material.
  • Harassment, bullying, threats, or impersonation of others.
  • Attempting to bypass, disable, or circumvent district content filtering or security.
  • Commercial purposes, fundraising, or unauthorized financial transactions.
  • Sharing the device or its connection with people outside the student's household.

Internet Safety & Content Filtering

In compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), the hotspot applies district content filtering whether the device is used on or off campus. Filtering reduces, but cannot guarantee the complete elimination of, access to inappropriate content.

Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their student's use of the device at home. The District is not responsible for content accessed if filtering or security measures are tampered with or circumvented.

Care of the Device

Keep it safe

Store the device indoors in a safe, dry place. Do not leave it in a vehicle or exposed to extreme heat, cold, or moisture.

Keep it whole

Return the hotspot with all issued components, including the charging cable and adapter. Do not remove asset tags or labels.

No repairs or changes

Do not attempt to open, repair, or modify the device. Contact the IT Help Desk for any problems.

Report problems promptly

Report loss, theft, or damage to your school or the IT Help Desk immediately. A police report may be required for theft.

Financial Responsibility

Families are responsible for the reasonable care of the device while it is in their possession.

  • If the device is lost, stolen, or damaged due to neglect, misuse, or failure to follow this agreement, the family may be responsible for the full replacement cost as determined by the District.
  • Normal wear or a verified manufacturer defect will not be charged to the family.
  • Data service may be limited, throttled, or suspended in cases of misuse or excessive non-educational use.

Returning the Device

  • The hotspot must be returned, in good working condition with all components, at the end of the school year, upon request by the school or District, or if the student withdraws or transfers.
  • Devices that are not returned may result in a charge for the replacement cost and may affect the clearance of district obligations, consistent with district policy.

Monitoring & Service Limitations

The hotspot is district property. Network activity may be monitored and logged for safety, support, and policy-compliance purposes, and users should have no expectation of privacy when using the device or district network. Data service depends on cellular coverage and may be subject to data limits; the District does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
